Sudden, Random, Unprovoked & Violent …bouts of Ignorance

It seems as if the “anonymous” writers behind the unpopular and pro BSL blog Sudden, Random, Unprovoked & Violent seem a little bit bitter. Of course, they are always a bit bitter when it comes to ANY positive press that “pit bull type” dogs seem to receive and the Ulster county Sheriff’s K9 training program has seemed to ruffle their bitter feathers.

“On Friday, that was the case at SUNY Ulster as the college hosted a K9 graduation featuring top dogs Maverick, a Chocolate Lab; Kiah, a Pit Bull; and Farrell, a German Shepard, named after Sgt. Shawn M. Farrell II, who was killed in action on April 28, 2014 while serving in the U.S. Army’s 10th mountain division in Afghanistan. “- Paula Mitchell, Hudson Valley News Network

The Top Three

All three dogs, one Chocolate Lab; one Pit Bull and one German Shepard successfully completed a 14-week training that included tracking, handler protection and article searches and all three will be moving on to complete narcotic detection training.  Three dogs… three very different breeds, with all of the exact same training- yet the “anonymous” writers at SRU&V focus their outrage on one particular dog. Has that dog attacked anyone? No. Has that dog attacked any other animal? Nope. Has that dog robbed a bank? Crashed a car? Hijacked a plane? Ran off and joined ISIS? Nope. The only thing that Kiah, a “pit bull” has done wrong, was to be born a pit bull, according to SRU&V.

Passive Aggressive

According to SRU&V, thousands of interested trainers, other law enforcement and animal welfare are “interested” in why the Poughkeepsie Police Department in Dutchess County dared to have a pit bull as a K9 Officer, even typing up a list of passive aggressive questions that have absolutely nothing to do with the training of Kiah and more about an “attempt” to dig up some secret and covert conspiracy involving the alleged almighty Animal Farm Foundation.  Would Kiah have caught BSL advocates attention, like the writers behind SRU&V if she hadn’t been a pit bull? Of course not. Would they be questioning the integrity of a police department if it involved any other breed OTHER than a pit bull? Hellll no. They would absolutely positively would care less.

The Answer is Simple

According to many experts, even though certain breeds are the favorite, the job of a police dog is not breed specific which is what Kiah has proven.  “The breed isn’t important,” said Brad Croft, who trains dogs for law enforcement and the military and found Kiah in a Texas animal shelter after her previous owner was arrested for animal cruelty. “It’s what’s inside of the dog that’s important (AP, NYPOST 2015)” and Croft is absolutely right.

In a nation where dogs of all breeds, pit bulls especially, are filling the shelters, why wouldn’t programs want to invest in finding a purpose for perfectly healthy animals? If a dog of any breed shows the ability to be able to work like Kiah, don’t we have an obligation to put them in a position to be something other than fertilizer? Budgets are being cut left and right, leaving our law enforcement with smaller budgets and considering most K9’s are selected from carefully bred lines with a hefty price tag. Traditional K9 breeds cost as much as $15,000 per dog and with cuts made in 2015, it’s not hard to see why programs like Animal Farm Foundation has can save tax payers money in their own community and nationwide.

Croft has long advocated for the use of shelter dogs for this specialized work, telling ABC news in 2014,”All they need is a chance to prove themselves and these dogs will work every bit as hard as the purebred dogs that we bring in from overseas.”- Animal Farm Foundation

Comparing Apple and Oranges… Which you can Easily Do

SRU&V throws in the passive aggressive jab, “Kiah belongs to the type of dog which killed a record 33 humans in 2015, and maimed or otherwise permanently disfigured 459 humans” and that really has nothing to do with Kiah. However, since they opened the door, along with BSL advocates by starting to compare the actions of dogs to humans, should we start questioning why the police force hire white men? Statistics show that white men have killed, raped and robbed far more people than all animals combined. How about African American men? How about just the male gender? That would include one of the “anonymous” writers behind SRU&V, Jeff Borchardt (Who has engaged in illegal behavior that could have resulted in multiple deaths.), Richard Prince, a BSL advocate who was fired due to his violent posts involving animal abuse, William Johnson, another male who has driven while intoxicated, Jon Felosi, convicted drug dealer and active BSL advocate. Last time anyone checked, Kiah hasn’t displayed any negative behavior that wouldn’t make her qualified for the position she was trained for and the writers behind SRU&V can’t find anything either… minus her breed.

Transparency

The great thing about Animal Farm Foundation is the transparency, which can’t be said for the BSL Advocacy. On their website, they explain the sponsorship that Animal Farm Foundation provides to Universal K9, founded by Brad Croft who trains and places dogs in police departments around the country at NO CHARGE (In other words…. AAF pays for the training at Universal K9 and Croft donates the trained dog to the police department.). Go ahead and check it all out here, it pretty much explains the whole program.  I really feel the need to point out just how easy it was to find these answers and it really shines a glaring light on just how BSL advocates (like the ones behind the obvious ill researched SRU&V blog…) will use deceptive tactics to hide the truth from the public.

An Insult By Any Other Name is Still an Insult

Anyone reading the SRU&V blog post about Kiah and the Poughkeepsie police department can see the non-subtle insultive tone of their post. What they are insinuating but just don’t have the spine to actually say is that they somehow feel that the Poughkeepsie police department is letting a “land shark” run around and play police dog.  They are insinuating that the police handler/partner of Kiah is somehow a secret Animal Farm Foundation agent and that this is a huge conspiracy, because according the writers of SRU&V and BSL advocates, pit bulls are only good for two things: killing and dying. What they can’t stand is the fact that these dogs can be more and rise above what man had intended for them to be hundreds of years ago. What really pokes them in the butt is that Kiah and countless of others dogs like her are proving SRU&V and BSL Advocates wrong every day.  Either way, Kiah is amazing and will keep being amazing and there is nothing that SRU&V and their fellow BSL Advocates will be able to do about that except for whine and cry… which they already do enough of.

  1. A few points, If I may:
    – No one specific breed of domestic dog should be excluded from formal public service, but to say all breeds are equal is a false statement.
While German Shepherds and Belgium Malinois excel at train ablility, focus and strong work ethic… Pit Bulls champion an ultra loyalty to their leader, terrier tenacity, and the ability to forgo pain.
The Best Police Canines are carefully chosen for their particular application.

    – Internet trolls (Ultra liberals or White Supremacists or Pit Bull haters or the likes) have to create “CONSPIRACY” and falsify data/statistics is fortify their argument. Some of the earliest CDC Statistic Charts used by the pit bull hating conglomerate were clearly photo shopped (and why there was never a link/ source to the original info). Also keep in mind… 15 cities to 1 (Nation wide) are rescinding breed specific language in local dangerous dog ordinances. This creates a sense of urgency for the haters, so they are grasping at straws and paperclips and toe nail clippings… SOMETHING to get a foot hold on.
    – The then deputy city attorney for Denver, CO (and founding member of DBO) Kori Nelson actually told the Denver Post (circa 2009) that Pit Bull Advocates and large organizations like Humane Society of the United States stood against BSL due to being funded by dog fighting proceeds. Is Senator McCarthy in the house?

    – Dont believe everything you hear or read on the internet! There are plenty of non-profit animal welfare organizations (big and small) out there that are less about the animals and more about the progression of the organization (aka big paychecks for the top offices). Corporation-esque non-profits do less of the every day dog in need and more of the high publicity cases for notoriety and annual donation potential. Just something to consider when you pull your check book out to write a donation.
