Come on. Come the f@ck on. Alright, I get there are legitimate breeders out there. Legitimate, ethical breeders that want to better the breeds of dogs that they love. Whatever-  I don’t hold anything against you… but then- you have people like… the Toadline and Iron Mitt Kennels.

You know what, let me just give a great big F@CK You shout out to Iron Mitt Kennels. Seriously. First of all… your over priced mutts (Yes, you read that correctly- over priced mutts) are not a pure bred anything much less an American Pit Bull Terrier.

Hello to the next generation of seemingly legitimate back yard breeders (Yes, that was a purposeful oxy-moron.). Who the heck knows what those dogs are mashed with.  Some American Pit Bull Terrier? Sure! How about some American Bulldog? Well Duh…. Sprinkle in some Mastiff to reach that whopping 155 lbs? Why the hell not? Maybe some…. Mini Schnauzer? Who the hell knows? Great Dane? Could be?!!

You know what I see when I read their “resume” of pedigrees? Blah, blah, mutt, fancy mutt, American Bully, mutt, over priced mutt, American Pit Bull Terrier x with what ever, mutt, some more mutt…. and then the “Top Producing American Pitbull Terriers in the country” nonsense. Gee- Where have I heard that before? Oh riiiiiight… from every backyard breeder EVER. Every back yard breeder will tell you their mix mashed mutts up are top of the line!  I wonder how well that line of bullshit worked out for back yard breeders that created Niko- the over 130 lb mutt who killed a young 4 year old girl in Louisiana.

The scary part is…. they inbred these bad boys. They want bigger. Bigger head, bigger body, more mass, deeper chests, bigger, badder and not one single thought of the damage they are doing to millions of innocent dogs.

Let’s talk truth for a moment- As long as we (As pit bull, Bully breed or whatever owners) allow this shit to keep going on, we will be fighting Breed Specific Legislation for the rest of our lives and our children and their children will be doing the same thing. What is the solution? I don’t know- but I do know, that as a community that loves our dogs and know just how awesome, strong, hard working and inspiring they are and can be, we are going to have to be the ones that demand some sort of something to protect not just our dogs, but all dogs from this type of greed.

I know that back yard breeders affect every breed out there, but when something goes horribly wrong with back yard breeders breeding dogs like this, like the case of Mia DeRouen– it becomes deadly and horrific. People like Iron Mitt Kennels are the gas that fuels Breed Specific Legislation.

What happens if that dog from their “purebred American Pit Bull Terrier” line gets tired of being sat on and bites the child? I can tell you what will happen….millions of families and innocent dogs will pay the price for it. Is that what you want?

What can 496,336.00 dollars buy you? A house? A few houses? A car? A house and a car? If I sit here and think about what 496,336.00 dollars can cover, I think about couples who are wanting to adopt. I think about fertility treatments. I think about families drowning in medical bills and medication. Massive credit card debt, car payments, house payments, family vacations and new beginnings for struggling families- but I can tell you what doesn’t come to my mind when it comes to something costing 496,336.00 dollars: a litter of 8 pups.  A litter of 8 mutts. 54,281 dollars per pup.

I have written about “Hulk” the supposed massive “pit bull” (which- it is NOT a pit bull…..) before and his owners quick disgusting rise to fame and somehow, I’m not really shocked, at their new media story but what I am shocked and even more disgusted at is the media embracing this greedy,pathetic, backyard extreme breeder.

“Aptly-named Hulk is well known in the dog breeding world and people will pay up to £19,000 for one of his puppies. But if owner Marlon Grennan has anything to do with it, they could go for up to £35,000 each”- The LADBible.

There is nothing positive or inspiring about this Marlon Grennan’s rise to fame. The “Hulk” isn’t a positive or heart warming story about pit bulls- in fact, it’s the opposite. It’s a story that causes millions of pit bull owners and legitimate rescues to cringe and worry. In fact- everything about Marlon Grennan and his money making “Hulk” is a glaring example of dark side of the back yard breeding issues and the media is helping Grennan, and hundreds of other unethical back yard breeders, by glamourizing these obvious genetic hot messes. Since Grennan and DarkDynastyK9 won’t be upfront and honest about the actual breeds used to create Hulk, what do you think their budding fan club and wanna be back yard breeders will use to attempt to mimic the great Hulk? I mean, you know they will- it’s not like back yard breeders are not already trying to create the next biggest bully breed ever and unfortunately- we’ve seen those go tragically wrong before.

Mia Derouen, a four year old girl, was killed by a 130 lb designer mutt very much like the “Hulk”. Labeled as a “pit bull” when in fact, it was anything but that.  However- millions of dogs are paying the price because of dogs like that. Millions of owners are paying the price for men like Grennan and his fellow extreme breeders. Two dogs, probably with similar genetic blue prints and it’s no secret that Grennan is breeding for size, power and aggression as he brags about training these dogs and future leaders to be “protection dogs”. He is breeding for bigger and history has shown just how dangerous and deadly that can be.

What will happen if the Hulk one day doesn’t feel like being ridden like a pony by Grennan’s son and snaps? A dog with the size and power of Hulk will easily kill the child. What will happen if just a little slip happens as Grennan allows his son to participate in the protection training of Hulk and he gets injured?

Grennan has built his fame on the back of Hulk, what will he do if something goes horribly wrong one day? What if one of those 25,000 – 50,000 dollar puppies grows up and kills someone? Who will pay the ultimate price for that? Not Grennan- because he’s openly breeding for power, strength and aggression with the medias blessing. You know who will pay the ultimate price? Your dog. My dog. Millions of innocent dogs. Millions of innocent pit bull type dogs. All eyes are on Grennan’s dogs and when one steps out of line the world will know, but Grennan and his very public and open back yard breeding operation won’t care- they’ll be to busy trying to create an even bigger version of Hulk.

When will he stop? Probably never as long as the media keeps patting Grennan on the head and giving him a free pass- but I’m not giving him a free pass. This is wrong. He is no different than the toadline breeders and the rest of the back yard breeders that keep making the fight for our dogs harder. Grennan should enjoy the great press now because if one thing ever happens and one of his genetic hot messes hurts anything, a person or an animal, the very same media that showed him off for ratings will crucify him and it will be world wide.

The Big Question

I write what I write because it needs to be written. Are my views always popular? Hell no- but the popular view isn’t always whats right. I’m so blessed to know a group of amazing advocates who don’t just talk the talk but walk the walk. Advocates responsible for changing laws, advocates responsible for saving lives, advocates for educating… Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers, Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and children all stand up and become more then just a voice but they become the strength behind our advocacy.

Then you have POS like Kyrsten. Kyrsten thinks her dog is beautiful. Krysten thinks she can make some cash. Krysten thinks she should breed her dog.

Whaaaat? Whats wrong with a breeding a dog that will have at least 4-8 puppies? Whats wrong with at least 50% of the litter being dropped off at the pound? I mean, it will at least give job security to all those facebook cross posters who are “pledging & chering” all of those doomed to die by midnight dogs nationwide.

But- I have this feeling Krysten just don’t care about the silly fact millions of dogs are being euthanized because shelters are just running out of room. I’m sure Krysten and her friends are totally top line breeders, right?

So, the daughter is “timid and shuts down when overly stimulated”…. Which could become even more serious issues with her pups since she’s being bred right back into the same gene pool. TOTALLY MAKES SENSE.

….I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- BSL will never go away until back yard breeders are shut down. Until we stand as a community and force some sort of legislation to stop this, we will always have BSL lurking around. I know there are professional ethical breeders that are needed to better our beloved breed, to fix the genetic messes created by back yard breeders- it’s those people that need to step up and ask demand laws that regulates and restricts the average joe blow from f@cking up the breed.

It’s more than obvious the problem is growing and it’s going to take ethical responsible breeders, advocates, AVMA and everyone else to step up and stop this. Until then….

Nature Versus Nurture

It’s like the never ending battle when we talk Nature vs. Nurture in the animal kingdom- especially when we are talking about dogs. However- (((Warning! ::Spoiler Alert!!::))) as I was siting down watching Jurassic World with my 11 year old- it seems as if the argument has been answered, well- a version of the answer, Hollywood style that is…

Alright- it’s no secret I’ve always been a fan of the Jurassic Park franchise. I like the idea of movies showing just how wrong things can go when humans try to play God and each and every Jurassic movie does that.

From birth, the gang of Raptors worked with the Owen Grady, a Velociraptor expert and trainer- its obvious that the closeness was an important fact because during the movie, when discussing the connections or lack of connections between humans and dino’s Owen comments:

“I was there the moment they were born, I was imprinted on them…”

 Towards the end of the Jurassic World, you notice an internal struggle with in the ever deadly raptors. The struggle between nature and nurture. Do they chomp on the man who raised them, respected them, trained them and took care of them or….. do they try to protect him?

Now, I’m not saying they didn’t kill anyone because they did and at least one was a well deserved blood bath- but what’s interesting is who they didn’t kill and the fact that it was a conscience choice to NOT kill them. Is this Hollywood’s way of telling us that genetics and environment can play a part in animal/human interactions?

When it comes to dogs- studies show the something similar:

 “It is critical to remember that both genetics and environmental influences play an important role in the behavioral development of dogs.  Through both responsible breeding and  raising it will be possible to produce puppies that will successfully integrate into our lives.”

Although, one who have to wonder if environment plays a even bigger role? As humans evolved- so did dogs. Humans breed dogs for a job but they also shaped the emotional stabilities of their dogs  When I read about the fatal wild dog pack attacks on reservations-  I don’t see how people can’t tell how environmental/nurture or lack of played a large part. Does nurture somehow counter balance genetics? Do both play a equally important part in having a healthy stable animal?

Proof shows us that the myth “It’s all how you raise them” is wrong when discussing how a dog will ne 100% of the time but what it does show is the myth “it’s all how you raise them” is a small part of  a ever evolving dog. When you have poorly bred dogs whose genetics are a mix and match of instability and place them in a environment that feeds the genetic instability- it’s no shocker that the dog is a hot mess- BUT proof shows us that when you take the same dog and remove them from the poor environment- those same dogs somehow are able to balance out some of those genetic instabilities. I’m not saying those dogs won’t have issues but are those issues workable? Absolutely- the Vicks dogs are a great example of that and they are not the only ones.

Sometimes nature triumphs over nurture and sometimes nurture triumphs over nature but we see its always a tug of war, but honestly- what can you expect from animals? The fact that dogs have evolved to the point of not looking at us like prey tells me that the internal balancing act is real and it was great to see the very visual tug of war in such an iconic movie- not to mention it highlights just how wrong it can go when you stomp on mother nature and create things that should never be created in the first place…. :::coughcoughtoadlinecoughcough::: Capture

Do you see this dog? You have destroyed this dog. This dog is incapable of doing anything- it can barely hold itself up much less walk. 

It’s disgusting how proud you are of your backyard breeding project. It’s disgusting and it should be criminal. I have no issue with responsible & ethical breeders, it’s those breeders that work to better their breeds of choice but these back yard breeders…  

 

These backyard breeders are a infection, a virus in the dog community. You heard me, if you are a backyard breeder-  you are a cancer and you need to be cut out.

  

I get it- these dogs are your cash cows, they pay your rent, buy you fancy crap and a claim to fame. Everything you have is because you have your dogs pump out litter after litter of inbred mutations that will never have a chance at life because you’ll just inbred those puppies too.

  75 freaking dogs with no purpose but to bring in money. Thousands of dollars for what? Dogs that have been overbred, inbred, barely able to walk, breath, stand…. thousands of dollars for a dog that may live 3 years?

  Seriously, if you can look at this dog and think it’s a fine representation of ANY breed- you need to go slice your finger and jump into shark infested waters.

  If you think this dog is healthy and living up to any sort of life for a dog – please, please, please do the world a favor and go play in traffic.

  Abusing dogs all because you don’t wanna work a real f@cking job.
